Wesleyan sweeps AB?race
PHILIPPI – Alderson Broaddus hosted the Seaton Invitational Saturday at the Barbour County Fairgrounds.
It was the first-ever home cross country meet for the Battlers, who played third in the women’s race and fourth in the men’s race.
AB sophomore Jenny Brewer finished the course in a time of 20:27.90 to win the women’s race.
Wesleyan won both the men’s and women’s team titles.
Emma Harrison finished second to lead the Bobcat women, while Taylor Stacy was fourth for the men. D&E was fifth and paced by Ellen Cantaral with a seventh-place effort.
The Senators finished second in the men’s race behind a third-place showing from Tommy Boone.
Millersville 2, D&E 0
MILLERSVILLE, Pa. – Millersville claimed a 2-0 win over Davis &?Elkins Saturday in men’s soccer play.
Jamie Vazquez and Ben Johnston had goals for the winners Daniel Nock made six saves in net for the Senators.
D&E (0-3-1) will begin Great Midwest Conference play at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at home against Ohio Valley.
California (Pa.) 2, AB 0
PHILIPPI -The Alderson Broaddus University men’s soccer team lost a 2-0 decision California (Pa.) Saturday at AB Stadium.
Jeffrey Kyei and Kevin Helbig had goals for the Vulcans.
Dariusz Aitkenhead had four saves in goal for the Battlers, who will visit the University of Pitt-Johnstown at 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Daemen (N.Y.) 1, D&E 0
AMHERST, N.Y. – Daemen’s Kacey Bougard found the back of the net in the 78th minute to lead the Wildcats past Davis & Elkins, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon.
Ashley Winkelspecht saved four shots on the day for the Senators.
D&E (0-4) will begin G-MAC play at 4 p.m. Thursday against Ohio Valley.
Ohio Dominican 1, AB 0
PHILIPPI – Ohio Dominican recorded 29 shots, but scored just one goal in Sunday’s 1-0 victory over the Alderson Broaddus women’s soccer team at AB Stadium.
The Battler defense yielded a season-high 29 shots and 15 shots on goal in the loss. Sophomore goalkeeper Tayler Garcia tallied a career-high 14 saves in the decision.
ODU’s Jordan Mazzi scored the only goal in the game at 7:08 and was assisted by Amanda Fowler.
AB (0-4-1) will travel to Salem International at 3 p.m. Thursday for a G-MAC contest.
Notre Dame (Ohio) 3, D&E 2
CALIFORNIA, Pa. – The Davis &?Elkins College volleyball team wrapped up its second tournament of the season Saturday at California (Pa.).
The Senators were outlasted by Notre Dame (Ohio), 3-2 (23-25, 15-25, 25-21, 29-27, 15-12) before being swept by the host Vulcans, 3-0 (25-16, 25-23, 25-16).
Elizabeth Estes led D&E with 12 kills. Erin Legge and Alexis Mourier each chipped in with 10 kills. Alicia Stokes finished with 25 assists and Haylee Murray added 21 assists. Kelsey Richards recorded 19 digs while Nicole Miller notched 11 digs.
Mourier and Legge each tallied four kills against California. Stokes notched 10 assists and Miller finished with 10 digs.
Mourier was selected to the all-tournament team.
The Senators will return home at 6 p.m. on Tuesday to face Wheeling Jesuit.
AB splits games
CHARLESTON – The Alderson Broaddus women’s volleyball team lost to West Liberty University 3-1 (23-25, 25-8, 20-25, 21-25) and topped tournament host the University of Charleston 3-2 (25-21, 22-25, 14-25, 29-27, 15-8) Saturday at Eddie King Gym.
Four Battlers notched double-digit kills in the loss to the Hilltoppers – Caitlin Cain, Megan Christmann and Jayla McCrary each tallied 10, and Ashley MacDonald recorded 12 in the loss. Kayla Peterson led the Battlers with 43 assists and Cain garnered a double-double performance with 12 digs.
The Battlers collected 10 team blocks against UC. McCrary and Cain had two solo blocks apiece and Victoria Morgan finished with four block assists. Peterson added 50 assists.
AB (3-5) will visit Slippery Rock University at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
High school boys’ soccer
B-U 6, Hampshire 0
ROMNEY – Marty Elliott scored four goals to lead Buckhannon-Upshur to a 6-0 win over Hampshire Saturday in boys’ soccer action.
Trey Short, who kicked six extra points for the school’s football team the night before in a win over Elkins, added a pair of goals.
“We got big play out of our forwards,” B-U coach Mike Donato said. “Trey and Marty did excellent work up top supporting the midfield and creating space for runs.”
The Bucs held a 17-5 edge on shots on goal. Chris Orwig had five saves for the winners, while Isaak Lambert tallied nine and Robert Judy two for the Trojans.
B-U will host Lewis County at 8 p.m. on Tuesday.
