Battlers capture 2OT tilt
PHILIPPI – Senior Jose Noriega’s game-winning goal gave him a hat trick and propelled the Alderson Broaddus men’s soccer team to a 4-3 double overtime win over G-MAC foe Trevecca Nazarene University on Thursday.
The game winner came with a 1:35 remaining in extra time. Noriega notched an unassisted goal, which came on a penalty kick, and an assisted effort from Sat Dhaliwal to put the Battlers (2-7, 1-1 G-MAC) back in the match.
Freshman Peter McMenemy had two shots and added the fourth goal for the blue and gold.
Dhaliwal was on the leaderboard with seven shots taken and three shots on goal. Goalkeeper Joey Wysocki kept the Battlers alive with nine saves in the 108-minute game.
Connor Inman and Jeremiah Wright scored all three goals for the Trojans (4-4, 1-2 G-MAC).
Thursday’s win snapped a six-game losing streak for the Battlers, who will host Kentucky Wesleyan at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
AB earns tie
PHILIPPI – The Alderson Broaddus women’s soccer team tied Trevecca Nazarene University, 1-1, Thursday in G-MAC play.
Senior Brooke Hunsaker tallied the Battlers’ only goal with an assist from junior Olivia Augustine at 15:35. The goal was Hunsaker’s second of the season.
AB held TNU off the board for less than 10 minutes as Alex Hammond drew keeper Sarah Turner out of the goal and punched in the Trojans’ only score.
Turner finished the game with four saves for AB, which improved to 2-5-2 overall and 1-1-1 in G-MAC play.
AB will entertain Kentucky Wesleyan at 1 p.m. Saturday.
