Bucs hold off Tigers, 1-0
TENNERTON – Buckhannon-Upshur knew scoring chances against Elkins in Wednesday night’s Class AAA, Region II, Section 2 title game against Elkins would be minimal at best.
With the Tigers putting six players back on defense, along with poor weather conditions, the Bucs had to capitalize on any opportunities at the net.
Dylan Hall did just that, taking a pass from Trey Short and connecting from 30 yards early in the second half to lift B-U to a 1-0 victory at Ted Crites Alumni Field.
“We were prepared for the type of defense Elkins came out and played,” Bucs coach Mike Donato said.
“We were mentally ready to attack it, but our play on the outsides (in the first half) was inconsistent and forced us up the middle, which is what Elkins wanted us to do.”
Donato told his team at halftime to take advantage of any little space in the middle of the field, which Hall accomplished.
The match was played on even terms – from shots on goal (8-8) to fouls (6-6). The difference, however, being Hall’s shot 12:00 into the second half.
“We played extremely well and shut down most of their offensive chances,” Elkins coach Andy Montgomery said. “Our team was based on solid team defense and we did that tonight.
“We played our hearts out and I was proud of our effort.”
The Tigers’ best scoring chances came just before Hall’s game winner but B-U keeper Chris Orwig, who notched eight saves on the night, kept the visitors at bay.
“B-U is a quality team and found a way to beat us,” Montgomery added. “They kept punching and deserved to win.”
Tyler Gray had four saves for the Tigers, who end the season 11-9-2.
B-U (20-2-0) advances to regional final action at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Musselman High School against the section 1 winner.
