Bulldogs capture Barbour Bowl

PHILIPPI – Philippi Middle School’s Chase Boni was too much for Belington Middle School in the annual Barbour Bowl held last Wednesday at George Byrer Field.

Boni scored six touchdowns to help power the Bulldogs past the Hawks, 46-28.

Belington turned the ball over on downs twice in its own territory early in the first quarter and Boni scored both times off the short field.

The Hawks got on the scoreboard with 2:43 left in the second quarter when Hunter Gainer scampered into the end zone. The two-point conversion failed but the lead was cut to 14-6.

However, the Bulldogs took the ball right down the field on the next possession, and Boni scored as time expired to end the first half to give Philippi a 20-6 lead the break.

Philippi’s Kurtis Humphrey connected with Chase Collier for an 8-yard touchdown pass to start the scoring in the second half.

Boni also scored twice for the Bulldogs in the third quarter. Once on a 42-yard right sweep and the other on a run straight down the middle after the kick-off was returned to the 15-yard line.

Belington also scored twice in the third quarter. Quarterback David Shriver connected with Tanner Talbott for a 25-yard gain, and on the next play Garrett Haller lumbered 34 yards to pay dirt. Haller scored again on a 45 yard run down the right sideline.

Boni scored his sixth touchdown of the game with 7:56 remaining in the fourth quarter for the Bulldogs to make the score, 46-20.

Haller answered again with his third score of the evening with five minutes left and caught the two-point conversion for the final score.

Belington will host Elkins Middle School at 7 p.m. Wednesday, while Philippi will travel to Tucker Valley Middle School at 7 p.m. Thursday.
