Colts hold off Vikings

PHILIPPI – Dylan Johnson rushed for 149 yards and a pair of scores as Philip Barbour claimed a 28-21 win over Petersburg in front of the Homecoming crowd at George Byrer Field on Friday night.

“I’m very proud of how the team played,” Colts coach Curtis Bodkins said. “The offensive line did a much better job and didn’t get pushed around this week. Dylan Johnson rushed for 149 yards and anytime he does that there is a good chance we’re going to win.”

The Vikings (2-4) got on the scoreboard first when Ryan Van Meter busted up the middle for a 2-yard touchdown with 8:12 left in the second quarter. Philip Barbour answered back when Dylan Johnson scored on a 4-yard run to tie the score 7-7 at the half.

“We went in at halftime and made some adjustments,” Bodkins said. “We saw some things we could do better and we executed the plan. The seniors really stepped up tonight. I saw a look in their eyes that they weren’t going to lose this game.”

The Colts took the lead in the third quarter when quarterback Tyler Titchnell hit Al Johnson with a 14-yard pass. However, Petersburg answered back when Van Meter scored on a 42-yard run to tie the game at 14-14.

Later in the third quarter, Philip Barbour regained the lead when Titchnell found Al Johnson on another 13-yard pass in the end zone. The Colts missed the extra point attempt, making the score 20-14.

The Colts padded their lead late in the fourth quarter when Dylan Johnson scored on another goal-line carry from 4-yards out. Titchnell connected with Al Johnson on the two-point conversion to bring the score to 28-14.

Petersburg answered back with 3:16 left in the game, when Van Meter scored his third touchdown on a 6-yard run.

“We had five turnovers and that’s what killed us,” Petersburg coach Jeff Dodd said. “We played well, but we shot ourselves in the foot with the turnovers. If not for them, it would have been a whole different ballgame.”

Titchnell completed 7 of 11 passes for 63 yards on the night. Al Johnson caught six passes for 57 yards and two touchdowns.

Defensively, Al Johnson racked up 10 tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery. Morgan Stalnaker added eight tackles and a fumble recovery, while Dylan Johnson and Travis Pomp each recorded sacks.

Philip Barbour (4-2) will entertain Elkins next Friday, while the Vikings will host Southern (Md.) on the same evening.
