D&E booters upset No. 13 Mercyhurst

ELKINS – Davis & Elkins continued its strong play to end the regular season with an impressive 2-1 win over No. 13 Mercyhurst Wednesday at Nuttall Field.

The Senators captured their fifth straight victory to improve to 10-4-1. They close the season at 2:30 p.m. Saturday against G-MAC foe Salem International.

A win over the Tigers will give D&E the G-MAC regular-season title and the top seed in the postseason tourney, which includes hosting the event.

James Pucci put D&E on the board first just 7 minutes into the contest off an assist from Hasika Wijegunawardan. Mason Carte then found the net in the 35th minute off a Pucci helper to give the hosts a 2-0 cushion at halftime.

The Lakers, ranked second in the Atlantic Region, cut the deficit to 2-1 on a score by Danny Deakin in the 58th minute.

Cameron Rivera had nine saves in a winning effort.

Mercyhurst, which had won seven straight games, held a 17-14 edge in shots and 10-3 edge in corners.

The Lakers dropped to 13-4 on the season.
