EHS places second in Big 10 meet
KINGWOOD – The Elkins High School boys finished second in the Big 10 Conference Championships held Saturday at Preston High School.
Senior Austin Hamrick cleared the course in a time of 16:55 to place second for the Tigers, while Matt Wallace was fourth (17:08), Dalton Hamrick 11th (18:22), Remington Knight 19th (18:49), Ben Huffman 38th (19:39), Brendan Wallace 52nd (20:22), Will Gongola 67th (21:35) and Jacob Earle 75th (22:26).
Bridgeport’s Abe Merinar was the individual champion in a time of 16:43.
The Hamrick brothers and Wallace were named to the all-Big 10 Conference team.
“It was great that Austin finished runner-up and that he, along with Matt and Dalton, made the all-conference team,” Elkins coach Shellie Burda said. “We need to take this momentum to the regional meet and qualify for the state meet.
“We have to keep running closer to the front and bring our fourth and fifth guys closer to the our top three.
“The girls also ran their best race of the year.”
Bridgeport won the boys’ title with 31 points, followed by Elkins (68), Fairmont Senior (82), Preston (103), Philip Barbour (112), North Marion (181), Buckhannon-Upshur (191), East Fairmont (212) and Liberty (219).
Philip Barbour, meanwhile, cruised to the girls’ championship. The three-time Class AA-A state champion Colts were led by Marissa Long’s third-place showing a time of 21:16. Teammate Allison Villers was 10th.
Hannah Gongola led the Tigers, who placed seventh, with a 19th-place showing in a time of 23:23. Other EHS participants included Sophie Hummer 22nd (23:34), Kathlyne Simmons 33rd (24:26), Monica Rossi 39th (25:12), Katy Ross 54th (27:42), Jaycie Saseen 60th (28:11) and Emily Chewning 64th (28:54).
Philip Barbour tallied 47 points. B-U (79), Preston (79), Grafton (109), East Fairmont (149), North Marion (149), Elkins (152), Bridgeport (154) and Fairmont Senior (209).
Grafton’s Alicia Parsons cleared the course in a time of 20:09 to win the race.
Laura Dean finished sixth (21:59) to lead the Bucs.
Elkins and B-U will travel to Hampshire on Thursday for the Class AAA, Region II meet. Philip Barbour, meanwhile, will compete in the Class AA-A, Region II eve nt on the same day in Grafton.
