Elkins boys win Preston race

KINGWOOD – Austin Hamrick turned in a first-place finish to lead Elkins to the team title at the Big 10 Preview on Tuesday.

Hamrick finished the course in a time of 17:23. Matt Wallace also placed third (17:43) for the Tigers, while freshman Dalton Hamrick was fifth (18:54).

Other runners for Elkins included Ben Huffman (12th, 19:45), Brendan Wallace (19th, 20:19), Dylan Dilly (34th, 22:12) and Will Gongola (35th, 22:14).

“Austin had a great race,” Elkins coach Shellie Burda said. “It’s great that he got a victory in his senior season.

“All the boys ran very well and it shows that hard work pays off.”

The Tigers had 38 points, followed by Philip Barbour (42), Preston (67), Buckhannon-Upshur (100), North Marion (118) and Grafton (130).

Scott Nesland placed fourth to lead the Colts. Chad Christenson was 18th for the Bucs.

Preston won the girls’ title with 39 points. Philip Barbour (47), B-U (90), Grafton (92), North Marion (125), Elkins (133) and East Fairmont (135) rounded out the field.

Hannah Gongola placed fifth in a time of 24:59 to pace the EHS girls. Monica Rossi was 24th (25:28), Sophie Hummer 26th (25:49), Kathlyne Simmons 27th (26:03), Katy Ross 39th (27:51), Jaycie Saseen 51st (31:05) and Emily Chewning 54th (31:30).

Preston’s Kaitlyn Workman placed first in a time of 20:53.

Middle school football

Elkins 20, Tucker Valley 0

Dalton Taylor had two touchdowns as Elkins Middle School claimed a 20-0 win over Tucker Valley Wednesday night at Wimer Field.

Beau Bright also returned an interception 50 yards for the Hornets (5-0), who will travel to Belington on Wednesday.

High school boys’ soccer

B-U 4, Preston 2

KINGWOOD – Buckhannon-Upshur claimed a 4-2 win over Preston Tuesday night in Big 10 Conference play.

Trey Short had a pair of goals for the Bucs, while Marty Elliott and Dylan Hall added scores.

B-U (12-1) will host North Marion at 8 p.m. today for another league game.

Youth football

Elkins Pee Wee team wins

TENNERTON – Elkins earned a 33-19 win over Buckhannon Blue Saturday in American Youth Football Pee Wee action.

Leading the Bengals on offense were Trevor Smith with 90 yards rushing, one touchdown and two completetions and a score, T.J. Guire (40 yards rushing, TD, 35-yard reception), Ty Carter (65 yards rushing,?TD), Landen Weese (40 yards rushing) and Devan Lamarne (26 yards rushing,?TD).

Tyler Ludwig and Trenton Marino each had seven tackles on defense, while Carter had five tackles and Mitchell Price and Guire four each.

Elkins (4-1) will travel to Shinnston Orange at 3 p.m. Sunday at Liberty High School.
