Elkins High bests RCB in soccer play

CLARKSBURG?- Hailea Harper netted two goals as Elkins closed the regular season with a 3-0 win over Robert C. Byrd Thursday night in Big 10 Conference play.

Harper’s first goal came 5 minutes into the contest. Freshman Olivia Underwood later scored on a header off a corner kick by Karli Hopwood to make it 2-0 at intermission.

Elkins closed the scoring 8 minutes into the second half on Harper’s second goal of the evening.

The Tigers (12-3-3) will host Buckhannon-Upshur at 8 p.m. Monday at Elkins High School in semifinal action of the Class AAA, Region 1, Section 2 tournament. Lewis County will travel to Hampshire in the other half of the section with the winners meeting Wednesday at the site of the highest remaining seed.

CLARKSBURG – Kollin Hopwood tallied a pair of scores and added an assist as Elkins claimed a 5-0 victory over Robert C. Byrd on Thursday night.

Cameron Wilson, Jacob Harper and Linkoln Barger added goals for the Tigers. Wilson, Alex Edwards and Ryan Henson also tallied assists on the evening.

“We overcame the wet conditions to play our most complete game of the season,” Elkins coach Andy Montgomery said. “We hope to carry the momentum into the playoffs next week.”

Elkins, which ended the regular season 11-5-2 overall and 8-4-0 in Big 10 play, will begin Class AAA, Region 1, Sectional tourney play at 6 p.m. Monday at home against Lewis County.

Top-seed Buckhannon-Upshur will host Hampshire in the other semifinal.
