Elkins soccer teams sweep sectional foe
The Elkins High School soccer teams swept sectional foe Hampshire on Saturday afternoon.
The EHS?girls (11-3-2) erupted for seven goals in a 7-1 victory over the Trojans (12-3-2). The win secured the top seed in the upcoming sectional tourney for the Tigers.
Isabella Nieves and Lindsay Roy scored two goals each to lead Elkins. Karli Hopwood, Megan Morral and Olivia Underwood also found the net, while goalkeeper Charlie George was nearly perfect, giving up Hampshire’s only goal on a penalty kick from Taylor Harwood.
“The girls did a great job,” Elkins coach Scott Cutright said. “It’s a long bus ride over there. We knew going in that we needed to win to secure the number one seed for the sectionals. We had a lot of goals scored and the girls did a nice job of converting their shots.
“We’re a really focused team right now.”
The Elkins boys, meanwhile, claimed a 6-3 win.
Kollin Hopwood led the Tigers (9-7-2) with two goals and an assist. Chris Bodkin, Mason Schoonover, Dalton Bobes and Linkoln Barger scored one goal each for the Tigers, while Cameron Wilson added an assist. The Tigers outshot the Trojans 11-6 and held a 6-3 advantage in corners. Tyler Gray had one save and Walter King had two saves in the goal.
“Hampshire came out to play and I was very proud of our team for coming back to win,” coach Andy Montgomery. “This sets up an even bigger game with Buckhannon- Upshur, as the winner gets home field for the sectional playoffs.”
Both Elkins teams will be in action Tuesday at home against the Bucs. The girls’ contest will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the boys’ match at 8 p.m.
