It was a battle of undefeated teams Wednesday night at Wimer Stadium as Elkins Middle School hosted the Patriots of West Fairmont Middle School.
This was a one-sided affair though, as the visitors cruised past EMS by a count of 46-13.
Elkins received the ball first but was forced to punt after suffering lost yardage on a fumble.
West started its first drive from the Elkins 40-yard line and wasted no time in getting Bryson Gilbert, a 6-1, 190-pound running back, involved. In five plays, he accounted for 33 yards and scored on an 11-yard scamper to put the Patriots on the board with an 8-0 lead after the two-point conversion.
The Hornets answered back with a nine play, 58-yard drive.
After moving the ball steadily down the field, Cameron Russell hit an open Tyler Monk on the left sideline for a 25-yard touchdown to cut the deficit to 8-7 after George Triplett’s conversion kick.
It was virtually all Patriots from that point however.
The next time West received the ball, quarterback Danny Booth ran 11 yards on a keeper and fired a 54-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Walker.
That two-play drive was followed by a four-play drive with Gilbert reaching paydirt on a 38-yard run, a 64-yard touchdown run by Gilbert and a 30-yard scamper by Booth to make it 32-7 at intermission.
Unfortunately for Elkins, the second half started the way the first half ended.
West started its initial drive of the third quarter on its 49-yard line. After new quarterback Zyon Dobbs gained one yard, Gilbert ran 27 yards to the 23, and Dobbs finished the drive with a touchdown strike to Walker.
The Patriots added another third-quarter score on a nicely blocked bubble screen that went for 43 yards from Dobbs to Taevon Horton.
EMS got on the scoreboard again with 5:54 left in the fourth quarter on a six play, 52-yard drive. Gabriel Jordan got the touchdown when he weaved his way through the entire Patriot defense from 34 yards out on a second down and 20 play. The PAT failed and the score settled at 46-13 in favor of West Fairmont.
The Hornets (6-1) finish out their regular season Wednesday, Oct. 30, at Wimer Stadium against East Fairmont.
