Lewis County holds off late charge by B-U

TENNERTON – Mark Metzgar rumbled for 127 yards and a score as Lewis County held off Buckhannon-Upshur, 31-20, Friday night in Big 10 Conference action at Freal “Red” Crites Memorial Stadium.

The Minutemen led 28-6 at intermission before Seth Cutright returned the second-half kickoff 82 yards to cut the lead to 28-14 after the two-point conversion.

B-U later used some trickery on a third-and-long play to get within 28-20. Receiver Marcus Lofton took a 10-yard pass and made a lateral to teammate Brandon Mallett, who broke free for a 65-yard score.

Lewis County put the game out of reach, however, on a field goal by Riley Gunter.

Isaac Kemper had a 92-yard kickoff and Skylar Carlton a touchdown pass as Lewis County jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter.

Cutright’s 32-yard touchdown run put the Bucs on the board before Dustin Martin and Metzgar tacked on rushing touchdowns for Lewis County to make it 28-6.

Martin added 51 yards rushing and Carlton 44 for the Minutemen, who improved to 4-1.

Cutright had 65 yards rushing on 11 attempts for B-U, while Dillon Gaudet added 85 yards passing, completing 8 of 13 attempts.

The Bucs (2-4) will return to action next Friday at home against Hampshire, while Lewis County will visit North Marion on the same evening.
