PBHS heads to 2nd round

Casandra Triplett scored three goals to power the Lady Colts past Keyser, 5-4, Monday, while her brother, Nick Triplett, also scored three goals to lead the Philip Barbour boys to a 10-1 victory over Pendleton County.

Both teams now move on to the second round of sectional playoffs tonight. The girls’ varsity team will travel to Frankfort, while the boys varsity team will travel to Berkeley Springs.

In the girls game, Philip Barbour took a 4-0 lead into halftime. Coach Pete Ferguson said he substituted his starters out in the second half and the change allowed Keyser to make a brief comeback.

“We came out and controlled the tempo of the game,” Ferguson said. “We did what we had to do. We built a big lead and changed out our players to save some energy for tomorrow night.

“(Keyser) fought back though and it got a little nerve racking at the end. Our girls responded well and we held on and got the win.”

The Lady Colts (12-9) fired off 19 shots during the game. Freshmen Brooke Pomp and Rylee Shahan also added goals for PB.

In the boys game, Nick Triplett scored three quick goals in the first half to help the Colts (5-13-2) generate a 6-1 lead at halftime. Also for PB, Travis Booth added two goals and Oryan Lopez, Chris Anglin, Isaiah Summerfield, Shay Mitchell and Micah Shahan scored one goal each.

“I felt our team really started to gel tonight,” coach Ron Jones said. “We have a lot of talent, but just not team talent. The boys started moving the ball better and passing better. I think they gained some confidence tonight.”

While the boys team won by a large margin, Jones said he felt the opposition played with enthusiasm.

“The one thing that impressed me the most was the play of the Pendleton County team,” Jones said. “Their kids played hard from the starting whistle until the end of the game. They never let up and kept trying. I have much respect for them.”
