Philip Barbour girls headed back to state meet
GRAFTON – The Philip Barbour girls’ cross country team will get a shot at a fourth straight state title.
The Colts earned another trip to states by capturing the Class AA-A, Region II meet held on Thursday afternoon.
Philip Barbour accumulated 49 points to hold off Berkeley Springs (64) and Frankfort (87), who also advanced. Tucker County finished seventh.
Marissa Long placed fourth in a time of 20:42 to lead the Colts, while teammates Allison Villers 10th (21:59), Marley Dib 11th (21:59) and Brianna Williams 13th (22:11) also placed in the top 15.
Other Philip Barbour finishers included Haley Truman (19th), Cara Kirk (26th) and Tristen Furby (39th).
Taylor Ambrose placed 15th to lead the Mountain Lions.
Grafton’s Alicia Parsons won the individual title in a time of 19:41.
The Philip Barbour boys’ squad also qualified for state competition with a third-place performance.
Scott Nesland placed third for the Colts. Other PB finishers included Trevor Matko (17th), Dustin Williams (18th), Tyler Baldwin (24th), Bryce McGee (28th), Ian Nuzum (29th) and Jesse Austin (40th).
Bridgeport (30), Frankfort (73) and Keyser (86) were the other team qualifiers.
The Indians’ Abe Merinar finished the course in a time of 16:31 to win the individual championship.
Marcus Mason placed 30th for Tucker County, which didn’t field a full team.
The Class AA-A girls’ state meet race will be held at 1 p.m., Nov. 2, at Cabell Midland High School, followed by the Class AA-A boys at 1:45 p.m.
