Area youth soccer teams win tournament

BARBOURSVILLE – Two Barbour County Youth Soccer teams captured championships Sunday at the West Virginia Kohl’s American Cup Tournament at the Barboursville Soccer Complex.

The U10 girls Sr. team, known as “Cheetahs,” defeated the Taylor County “Angels” 3-2 in double overtime. The U12 coed Jr. team, known as the “Orange Crush,” defeated the North Greenbrier Spartans, 3-2.

Members of the Cheetah’s include Audrey Williams, Macara Harris, Lydia Phillips, Darcy Knight, Garyonna Riffle, Gracie Miller, Katie Burner, Jaylan Weese, Alyssa Hill, Graylin Floyd, Mattie Marsh and Emma Gribble. The team is coached by Blake and Amy Williams.

“I am extremely proud of the heart and teamwork the girls displayed this past weekend,” Blake Williams said. “They have worked very hard for this and it is well deserved. Barbour County youth soccer overall had an impressive showing at the tournament and this whole year. Our program continues to grow and get stronger.”

Members of the Orange Crush include Ethan Knight, David Freeman, Ethan Gregory, Carson Cvechko, Noah Ward, Coleton Shahan, Austin Bolyard, Bo Stevens, Dalton Shifflet, Eli Drooger, Trenton Whited, Harley Knotts and Ben McDaniel. The team is coached by Jairemy Drooger and Mike Cvechko.

“It was a great weekend and the boys played very hard,” Drooger said. “I was proud of the heart they showed in the final. The 2-0 lead turned into a 2-2 tie, but they kept their composure and played their game against a great opponent to score a late goal for the win.”

The U12 girls Sr. team “Red Hots” took second place in their division, while the U10 girls Jr. team “Red Zebras” finished with a 2-1 record and the U10 boys Jr. team “Yellow Tigers” finished with a 1-1-1 record.
