Colts, Bucs to vie for state berths

TENNERTON – The Buckhannon-Upshur volleyball team will meet Martinsburg at 2 p.m. today in the Class AAA, Region II finals at Musselman High School.

The Bucs earned their trip to the regional when they captured the sectional title Wednesday evening by defeating Hampshire 3-1 (25-13, 24-26, 25-17, 25-12).

Leah Blend led with an astonishing 25 kills, along with 35 digs, four aces and two blocks. Mackenzie Leigh followed with 16 kills, 32 digs, two aces and three blocks.

Sarah Ling had 51 digs, six kills and three aces.

Other notable player stats included Courtney Reed with 32 digs, seven kills and four aces, while Lindsay Wagoner contributed 47 assists along with 16 digs and two aces.

“I saw a new team out of the floor on Wednesday,” B-U coach Sheena Westfall said. “A group of girls that played as one unit, were determined and were on fire.

“We took control in the first set but came out a little slow and had some errors that hurt us and cost us the second set. Luckily we were able to pull ourselves back together and finish the night out strong. I hope we are able to finish the season off playing like this. If we play like this at the regionals, we are right in the running to make it to states.”

Martinsburg lost to Musselman in the section 1 title game. The Applemen will face Hampshire in the other regional semifinal contest.

Philip Barbour, meanwhile, will battle Frankfort in Class AA, Region II semifinal action at Robert C. Byrd High School.

The Colts were upset 3-1 (25-20, 25-23, 25-23, 25-14) by Robert C. Byrd in Thursday’s sectional title game.

Frankfort captured its section by defeating Petersburg, which will battle RCB in the other semifinal.

Both games will begin at 2 p.m.

The winner and runner-up from each regional advances to the state tournament, which will be held Nov. 15-16 at the Charleston Civic Center.
