D&E women edge AB to earn spot in title game

CEDARVILLE, Ohio – No. 2 Davis & Elkins used two first-half goals to defeat No. 3 Alderson Broaddus, 2-1, Thursday night in semifinal action of the G-MAC tournament.

The Senators netted two scores with under 20 minutes left in the opening half. Alison Bogar scored the first, while Ashley Muscat added the second on a cross from Emma Davis just 37 seconds later.

The Battlers cut the lead to 2-1 just two minutes into the second half when Brooke Hunsaker converted on a penalty kick.

But the D&E defense kept AB off the board to secure the hard-fought victory.

Ashley Winkelspecht made a pair of saves in goal for D&E, which improved to 11-7-1.

AB ended the campaign with a mark of 7-11-2.

In the second semifinal, No. 4 Ursuline knocked off top-seed and regular-season conference champion Cedarville, 1-0.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets dominated possession of the ball, putting up seven shots to just three from Ursuline, including four corner kicks for the hosts and none for the visitors.

The second half was more of the same for Cedarville as it posted seven more shots.

But the deciding goal came at 59:40 as Cassie Cripe made an incredible individual play by knocking down a clearing attempt, making a touch toward the goal and ripping a long shot over the reach of the goalkeeper that dropped under the bar and into the bottom corner.

The Arrows were able to sit back with eight defenders and secure the shutout and advance to the conference finals for the second straight season.

D&E and Ursuline met once during the regular season with the Senators earning a 2-1 road victory in overtime on Oct. 12.

Saturday’s title game is scheduled for noon.
