Tucker to host Vikings; PB heads to East

Class A, No. 15 Tucker County (5-3) will need a victory over visiting Petersburg (3-5) tonight to solidify its playoff hopes.

A crucial fourth-quarter defensive stand helped the Mountain Lions seal a 21-18 win over Pendleton County last Friday in front of the homecoming crowd at R.H. Armstrong Memorial Field/Class of 1984 Alumni Stadium.

Quarterback Austin Zirk had two touchdown runs in the first half as Tucker County overcame an early 6-0 deficit to lead 13-6 at the half.

Petersburg lost to Class AA, No. 5 Frankfort (7-1), 52-20, last Friday.

Philip Barbour

at East Fairmont

Class AA, No. 14 Philip Barbour will make another trip to Fairmont this week, this time facing off against the East Fairmont Bees.

The Colts (6-3) lost a shootout to Notre Dame, 41-38, last Friday. Philip Barbour’s three losses have all been by three points.

This week, the Colts will be without one of its top offensive and defensive players, senior Al Johnson, as a result of his ejection for arguing with the referee over a call in the loss to the Irish.

Junior quarterback Tyler Titchnell and senior running back Dylan Johnson have been bright spots on offense, while seniors Elijah Matlick and Elijah Heater (6-3,185) have anchored the defense.

East Fairmont (2-6) defeated Grafton last Friday, 28-27. So far this season, the Bees have scored 166 points and given up 291.

Preston at B-U

Buckhannon-Upshur hopes to close its season with a win at home against Preston.

The Knights, however, are looking to even their record with two games remaining in the season.

B-U (2-7) has lost five straight games. Last week the Bucs were defeated by Class AA, No. 8 Fairmont Senior, 49-7. Brandon Demastes scored the lone touchdown for the Bucs on a 42-yard run in the second half.

Preston (3-5) lost to Class AAA, No. 7 University, 28-6, in its last outing.

Pendleton at Moorefield

Class A, No. 5 Moorefield should be rested and ready this week when Pendleton County comes to town.

The Yellow Jackets (7-1) were off last week, while Pendleton County (3-5) lost a heartbreaker to Tucker County, 21-18.

The Wildcats had an opportunity to take the lead with 2 minutes remaining in regulation against the Mountain Lions, but a sack on first down resulted in a 9-yard loss, and was followed by three straight incompletions.

The Mountain Lions took possession and were able run out the clock to preserve the victory.

Moorefield will look for defensive end Brandon Riggleman to wreck havoc in the backfield, while sophomore running back Wil Schoonover has been tough for opponents to bring down. Junior quarterback Dakota Vetter has completed 45 of 80 pass attempts with 11 touchdown passes. He has also rushed for 289 yards and six touchdowns.

Liberty at Lewis County

Class AAA, No. 15 Lewis County will look to add to its win total tonight when winless Liberty comes to visit.

Last Friday, Lewis County (6-2) jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, shutting out Big 10 Conference foe Elkins, 49-0.

Liberty (0-7-1) lost to Class AA, No. 3 Bridgeport (7-1) last Friday, 42-0.

East Hardy at

Clear Spring, Md.

Class A, No. 14 East Hardy is looking to get back on track this week at Clear Spring, Md.

The Cougars (6-2) have lost two straight games. Last week, the team was upset by Berkeley Springs, 26-8.

Clear Spring (2-6) is coming off a 21-14 setback to Spring Mills.
