Area teams to take to hardwood

Area high school teams will return to the hardwood on Friday with several holiday tournaments on tap.

Elkins will host a four-team event that includes Philip Barbour, Tucker County and Tygarts Valley.

In Friday’s action, the Tigers will battle the Bulldogs at 7:45 p.m., while the Colts and Mountain Lions will take to the court at 6 p.m.

Saturday’s games include Elkins vs. Tucker County at 7:45 p.m. and Tygarts Valley vs. Philip Barbour at 5:45 p.m.

School officials are reminding fans that only WVSSAC coaches cards will be accepted and general admission will be $5 for all spectators.

Elkins High students will be admitted free.

Petersburg, meanwhile, will host one of the oldest tournaments in the state starting on Friday.

Moorefield and Pendleton County will square off in the opening game at 6 p.m., followed by Bath County (Va.) vs. Petersburg.

A consolation game will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday with the championship game set for approximately 8 p.m.

The Elkins girls also will take part in a holiday tournament at Fairmont Senior. The Tigers will face Robert C. Byrd at 1:45 p.m. Friday and John Marshall at 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Pocahontas County girls will compete in the Armory Classic Friday and Saturday at Summersville.
