Bulldogs win in Virginia
MONTEREY, VA. – The Tygarts Valley boys basketball squad traveled across state lines into Virginia last night to take on Highland County and held on for a hard- fought 50-43 win.
After a tight opening stanza, the Bulldogs pulled slightly ahead on the strength of Jace Kyle’s 15 first half points.
Highland County was unable to chip into Tygarts Valley’s consistent five-to-six point advantage throughout the second quarter and the halftime score stood at 24-18.
The tables turned in the third, however, as the home team started to defend more efficiently and was able to outscore the Bulldogs 12-6, and the game was all tied up at
It was nip and tuck from that point forward and Highland took the lead.
Fortunately for TV, Keighan Chewning came alive and poured in 11 points in the last five minutes of the final quarter and the visitors pulled away again for the seven-point margin.
“This team grew up some tonight,” said Tygarts Valley coach Tom Wamsley.
“Our kids pulled together to come from behind on the road. They were playing tight defense and they limited their turnovers on offense. It was great to see that happen.”
Kyle was the game-high scorer for the Bulldogs with 23 points, and Chewning had 13 total points in the game. Caleb Riggleman helped out with eight.
Three Highland County players reached double figures as Shane Pitsenbarger put up 17 points, Ethan Botkin scored 12, and Joey Whitelaw finished with 10 points.
The Tygarts Valley boys (1-1) and the Tygarts Valley girls (3-1) travel to Union for a double-header on Friday. The games are set to start at 6 p.m.
