Chowan gets past Senators; EHS girls fall

ELKINS – Kyree Bethel fired in 24 points to lead Chowan to a 79-77 win over Davis &?Elkins Saturday night at the McDonnell Center.

Bethel was 5-of-8 from beyond the arc and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. Three other Hawks notched double figures – Phoenix Butler-Pool drilled in 18, while Ashante Ross and Warren Powers sank 14 and 11, respectively.

Devin Miller led the way for the Senators with 24 points and a team-best six rebounds. Alex Visiljevic added 15 points and Wesley Sprinkle chipped in with 10.

The Senators built an early 16-9 advantage behind 11 points from Miller. CU answered with a 19-2 surge to go on top 28-18. D&E scored 13 of the final 16 points in the half to set a 31-31 deadlock at the break. Brian Dixon ignited the run with a three, followed by a traditional three-point play.

D&E broke a 44-44 tie on a 12-3 run, taking their largest lead of the evening at 56-47. Visiljevic registered seven of the 12 points. The Senators led 65-57 with six minutes to play. Bethel sparked a furious 9-0 rally by the Hawks, taking a 66-65 lead. Miller put Davis & Elkins back in front with a three on the ensuing possession, before Butler-Poole buried a three putting CU ahead for good,69-68. Chowan closed the game out by making six-of-six free throw attempts to secure the 79-77 win.

The Senators (6-3) will host West Virginia State at 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Girls basketball

Parkersburg 64, EHS 33

ELKINS – Haley Ackerman fired in 23 points to lift Parkersburg to a non-conference win over Elkins Saturday at Richard P. Simmons Memorial Gymnasium.

Brooke Kurucz added 10 points for the Big Reds, who led 35-15 at the intermission.

The Tigers (0-3) will entertain Philip Barbour at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday.
