ELKINS – An “eye-opening experience for some of our new kids,” is how new Elkins High wrestling coach Rick Reed described the season-opening match at conference foe Preston County on Tuesday night.

The Tigers were clipped by Preston 24-23, but lost more significantly to Robert C. Byrd and Fairmont

EHS had to forfeit seven of the 14 weight classes. Reed said, “It’s very hard to win when your roster isn’t filled up and you’re only taking half a team.

“That is why I’m more concerned with how we do individually as opposed to team scores.”

Tyler Reed and Dylan Lucas both had a good evening on the mats, with Reed going 3-1 with a pin, while Lucas was undefeated on the night with three wins and a pin.

Devon Young finished 2-1 in his matches and Alex Taylor closed out at 1-2.

“Our newcomers got introduced to high school wrestling and found out they’re not the big kids on the block anymore, but I saw improvement, even within the matches themselves,” said Reed.

The wrestling team takes to the mat again on Saturday when they travel to compete in the Keyser Kiwanis Invitational, a 12-team tournament.
