Elkins girls earn first victory

WESTON – After opening the season with four straight losses at home, the Elkins girls basketball squad went on the road to get their first win Thursday night, pulling away in the fourth quarter to defeat Big 10 Conference and sectional foe Lewis County by a score of 59-44.

The Tigers maintained a lead at the end of the first three quarters, but it was tight. They led 15-14 after one, 29-24 at halftime and 42-39 after the third quarter.

Elkins first-year coach Cathy Duffield praised her team’s overall effort.

“We played team ball all night, and they (her players) didn’t let the pressure get to them even though it was a hard-fought game.

“Finally we weren’t afraid to shoot the ball, we hit our foul shots, we were aggressive on defense and we boxed out on the boards. I think we probably had twice as many rebounds as Lewis.”

Meghan Dolly only had one field goal but went to the charity stripe 18 times, connecting on 15 of them, and scored 17 total points to lead Elkins in scoring.

Three other girls hit double digits for the Tigers. Logan Dudley had 12 points, with eight of those coming on free throws; Haley Lloyd had 11 and Charlie George finished with 10 points.

Brooklyn Perkey led the way for Lewis County, finishing with a game-high 23 points, while Karli Hamrick poured in 13 points.

Elkins (1-4, 1-2 Big 10) is off until next Friday when it travels to the Fairmont Senior Holiday Classic. The Tigers will play Robert C. Byrd at 1:45 p.m. in their opening game and John Marshall at 1:45 p.m. on Dec, 28

Lewis County will play at Gilmer County at 7:30 p.m. next Friday for a non-conference contest with the Titans.
