Lewis County defeats PBHS

PHILIPPI – First-year head coach Theresa Johnston notched her first career victory Tuesday, as the Lewis County girls’ varsity basketball squad defeated conference rival Philip Barbour, 43-37. Lewis County improved to 1-2 on the season, while PB dropped to 0-4.

“The girls did an awesome job,” Johnston said afterward. “They really played well. They executed well and they worked as a team. I couldn’t be any happier.”

Karli Hamrick and Brookly Perkey lead the way for Lewis County with 13 points each. Perkey also notched six steals and six rebounds. Braley Bozic led the team in rebounds with eight.

“I owe the victory to my assistant coach, Kenton Bozic,” Johnston said. “He’s really good with the girls. I’m really excited. Hopefully we can turn the program in the right direction.”

PB coach Stan Fitzwater said he was pleased with his team’s overall performance, but noted some areas need improvement. Fitzwater is also in his first season as head coach.

“We’ve got to get better on the offensive boards,” Fitzwater said. “The girls played hard. We just need to get more of an inside presence. We also need to raise our shooting percentage. We’re just going to have to work harder. We have 18 games left, so we’re going to try to get better every game.”

Senior Nikki Shriver went down with a knee injury early in the game. Fitzwater said he doesn’t know the extent of the injury.

“She was in a lot of pain,” Fitzwater said. “The girls held in there, though. They continued to battle back and forth. We ended up having to foul at the end of game and they beat us on foul shots.”

Brooke Pomp led the Colts in scoring with 18 points, while Celeste Kelly added 13 points.

The Colts return to action on Dec. 12 at Elkins. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. Lewis County also plays on the road Dec. 12 against Liberty at 7:30 p.m.
