Lucas headed ‘down under’ for tournament
ELKINS – Elkins High School half-back Dylan Lucas is about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. He was recently selected by Down Under Sports to participate in an international all-star football tournament in Brisbane, Australia.
“It’s an incredible opportunity,” Lucas said. “The trip is seven days of playing football in New Zealand and Australia and three days of fun in Hawaii afterward. I can’t wait to go.”
Lucas finished his senior campaign with 621 yards rushing, nine yards receiving, 376 kick return yards and three rushing touchdowns.
“I love playing football,” Lucas said. “I had some great teammates. They were a great group of guys. We had fun.”
The 2014 Down Under Bowl is scheduled for June 28 through July 7. The games are played under High School Federation Rules and are officiated by USA and Australian officials.
Lucas needs assistance from the community to participate in what he describes as “a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
“I’m a little unsure of what to expect,” Lucas said. “It’s going to be a challenge because I’ve never left the country before. I know the game will be fast-paced. The players will all be top caliber.”
Lucas has raised some funds for the $6,000 trip and hopes he can meet the June 2 deadline. Donations can made by visiting www.downundersports.com.
