PBHS Colts beat Buckhannon
TENNERTON – Trevor Matko’s 3-point bucket late in the fourth quarter helped give Philip Barbour the momentum needed to defeat conference rival Buckhannon Upshur 47-39 on Monday.
PBHS coach Marcus Johnson said he was pleased with the team’s performance, after bouncing back from a loss at Elkins last week.
“We talked about being patient on offense, but I think they forgot about shooting,” Johnson said. “I think that was the first big shot (Matko) hit, tonight. He got in the lane a few times and missed the shot.
“Last week, he had 27 points against Elkins. He didn’t shoot the ball very well tonight. But when he made that jumper, it was big.”
With about 3 minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, both teams were battling back-and-forth for the lead. However, a steal by the Colts led to Matko’s 3-pointer shot that seemed to sway the momentum for the visitors.
Matko and Kamian Bartlett both finished the night with 11 points each. Senior Al Johnson scored nine points and added nine rebounds.
“It gave us a momentum change, real quick,” Johnson said. “We didn’t play a good first half and we didn’t play a good third quarter, but halfway through the fourth we started picking up the tempo of the game. It gave a positive influence.”
B-U Coach Eli Gurash said he was pleased with his players’ “passion.” However, he said the team needs to funnel that passion into positive energy, referring to a technical foul called in the final minute against the Bucs.
“I thought overall, our man-to-man defense was excellent for the length of the game,” Gurash said. “We struggled offensively. We missed a lot of makeable shots, which left us in a four-point hole for the entire game.
“We cut the lead to one in the fourth quarter, but we threw the ball away on the next two consecutive possessions and gave up two consecutive baskets. That was the death knell for us. We tried to fight back but we lost our composure on the court.”
Tommy Kodol led the Bucs with 11 points and Cody Garrett added eight points.
Philip Barbour (2-1) returns to action on Dec. 19 in Grafton. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Buckhannon (0-2) will next play Webster County on Dec. 20 at home. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
