Elkins’ 3-0 start to the season has been sparked by balanced scoring.

The Tigers are paced by forward Logan Phillips, who is averaging 26 points per game. He had a career-high 40 in Elkins’ first game of the year against Philip Barbour.

But second-year coach John Lawson also has received scoring from sharpshooter Braden Hammond and forward Colby Gainer.

Hammond, a junior, is putting in 14 points per outing, while Gainer is hitting for 12.

Mo Kelly also has been in the scoring act. Along with being a key defender, the junior guard is just on the edge of averaging in double figures with 9.1 ppg.

The other starter, Tyler Shreve, is contributing nearly seven points and a team-high 5.0 assists per contest.

Elkins will host a holiday tournament on Friday and Saturday at Richard P. Simmons Memorial Gymnasium.

The Tigers will face Tygarts Valley on the first night and Tucker County for a Saturday night battle.

Both games will begin at 7:45 p.m.

Philip Barbour is the other team in the tournament and will battle Tucker County at 6 p.m. Friday and Tygarts Valley on Saturday.

Speaking of the Colts, it was a busy weekend for Marcus Johnson’s squad.

After playing two straight games in the Grafton tournament, Philip Barbour traveled to the Charleston Civic Center on Saturday to face Wayne as part of the FCA Hoops Classic.

Representing the Big 10 Conference, the Colts (2-4) led by seven points after three quarters before eventually falling, 57-52.

The Classic was a challenge between the Big 10 and Cardinal conferences.

The Big 10 won six of the nine games in the event.
