Tatum’s 29 points lift AB past ’Cats

PHILIPPI – Malcolm Tatum fired in 29 points to lead Alderson Broaddus to a 77-72 win over West Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday night at Rex Pyles Arena.

Tatum, a sophomore, was 9 of 10 from the field and 3 of 4 from beyond the arc for the Battlers, who led 39-31 at the intermission.

AB increased its lead to as many as 20 points in the second half before the Bobcats used a late surge to get within five at game’s end.

Adam Kline added 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Battlers (5-4).

T.J. Thompson led Wesleyan (5-5) with 17 points, followed by Alexsandar Djordjevic with 12 and Ray Warren with 11.

The Battlers will be idle until visiting Glenville State at 4 p.m. on Dec. 21.

Wesleyan will compete in the Puerto Rico Invitational beginning on Monday.

Tucker County 69, Trinity 43

MORGANTOWN?- Derek Zirk fired in 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds as Class A, No. 7 Tucker County opened the season with a 69-43 win over Trinity on Wednesday night.

Zirk also had six assists and six steals for the Mountain Lions, who led 28-15 at the intermission before outscoring the Warriors 20-9 in the third canto.

“We came out a little tight in the first quarter,” Tucker County coach Tom?Gutshall said. “We had some good shots at the basket but didn’t convert.

“I thought our defense was pretty good overall, though.”

Ian Nichols had a game-high 21 points and grabbed nine caroms for the Mountain Lions. Austin Zirk also reached double figures with 10 points.

Christian Griffith led Trinity with 11 points.

Tucker County will travel to Notre Dame at 7:30 p.m. on Monday.

CLARKSBURG – Kevin Steele scored 19 of his game-high 21 points in the first half to lead Robert C. Byrd past Buckhannon-Upshur 77-43 Wednesday night in Big 10 Conference action.

Devonti Birch added 15 points and Luke Dyer 10 for the Eagles, who led 37-19 at halftime.

Dillon Gaudet had 10 points and Zane Clevenger nine for the Bucs.

B-U (0-1, 0-1 Big 10) will host Hampshire on Saturday.
