ELKINS The Elkins Tiger swim team hosted a tri-meet with Robert C. Byrd and Notre Dame Tuesday at the George A. Myles Pool at Davis & Elkins College.

In combined points (boys and girls) EHS defeated RCB 129 to 115, and topped Notre Dame 128 to 113.

Notre Dame squeaked by RCB 124 to 120.

The EHS girls led the way, totaling 86 points to RCB’s 43, and 87 against Notre Dame’s 39. The boys fell to RCB by 72 to 43, and also to Notre Dame by 74 to 41.

The Tigers started the meet strong, with first place finishes in five of the first seven events.

Skout Barger, Lauren Cain, Kayla Gainer and Tayler Lee got the night started with a winning time of 2:08:14 in the girls 200-yard medley relay.

EHS swept the 200 freestyle when Samantha Hall took high honors for the girls and Brendan Cain answered for the boys.

In fact, the home squad dominated in the freestyle events.

Along with the wins in the 200 free, Elkins’ Gainer touched ahead of everyone in the girls 50 freestyle; Lee won the girls 100 freestyle with Skylee Watson placing third; Tyler Kenney took first place in the boys 100 freestyle; and Barger placed second in the girls 500-yard freestyle.

The freestyle relays were more of the same for the Tigers as Gainer, Barger, Lauren Cain and Hall won the 200 freestyle relay for the girls; and Kenney, Benjamin Daft, Brendan Wallace and Brendan Cain placed first in the boys 200 free relay.

The girls also won the 400-yard freestyle relay while the boys came in second on their side.

In other events, Lauren Cain won unopposed in the girls 200-yard individual medley, Hall won the girls 100-yard backstroke and Wallace placed third in the boys 100-yard breaststroke.

“Our kids had some great swims tonight,” said Elkins coach Joelle Kenney.

“Most of our experienced swimmers are taking a leadership role, and our newer swimmers are rising to the challenge and pushing themselves. But we are most proud of how they are becoming a team, and showing compassion for each other both in and out of the pool.”

The Tigers host their next meet on Dec. 17 at 6:30 p.m. at D&E. It is a quad-meet versus Fairmont Senior, North Marion and East Fairmont.
