Trio of Colts to lead wrestling team
PHILIPPI – The Philip Barbour Colts will get a jump start on the upcoming wresting season Wednesday with a home scrimmage scheduled for 4 p.m. Teams invited to participate include Lewis County, Lincoln, Notre Dame and South
“The guys are looking pretty good so far,” PBHS coach Pete Ferguson said. “We’ve nearly got a full line-up. We have everything but a heavyweight, but I think we can probably move a guy up there. Having a full roster will help us in team competition, because we won’t have to take any
The Colts are returning an experienced group of wrestlers. Last season, senior Ian Nuzum and juniors James Bell and Travis Pomp qualified for the state tournament. While none took top honors, Ferguson hopes the trio can contend again this season for a state
Bell finished last season with a 42-16 record in the 160 lbs. weight class. Ferguson expects Bell to be at the top of his game again this season. He said Bell has a great work ethic that includes lots of running and conditioning.
“He’s really taken the leadership role,” Ferguson said. “He has stepped it up a notch. Hopefully he can take it to the next level and finish in the place rounds.”
In the 120 lb. weight class, Ferguson expects lots of wins from Nuzum. Last season, Nuzum finished with a 35-16 record.
“I expect him to do well,” Ferguson said. “He’s been working on finishing matches. Last season, he would get out ahead and then he’d make a mistake or something would happen and it would cause him to lose. Hopefully he will hit his stride and his experience will kick in and he can finish stronger and win those close matches.”
Pomp will wrestle in the 220 lb. weight class. His record last season was 22-16.
“He did exceptionally well for a first-year wrestler,” Ferguson said. “He’s very intense and a hard worker. Last season, he started slow but continued to get better. He even qualified for the state tournament. I expect that experience to really help him out.”
The squad currently boasts 24 wrestlers, including: James Bell, 160 lbs.; Jorey Carpenter, 120 lbs.; Justin Cox, 138 lbs.; Drew Daugherty, 170 lbs.; Chris Dunlap, 152 lbs.; Tony Dunlap, 170 lbs.; James Fisher, 170 lbs.; Aron Golden, 132 lbs.; Sabrina Jones, 106 lbs.; Randy McDaniel, 170 lbs.; Michael McVicker, 138 lbs.; Austin Morris, 132 lbs.; David Murphy, 106 lbs.; Ian Nuzum, 120 lbs.; Cory Phillips, 113 lbs.; Travis Pomp, 220 lbs.; Dale Scott, 152 lbs.; Ryan Scott, 132 lbs.; Matt Shelton, 120 lbs.; Jacob Tacy, 106 lbs.; Ryan White, 132 lbs.; Seth Gribble, 132 lbs.; Jordan Haller, 145 lbs.; and Cory Lowery, 195 lbs.
