Veteran AB soccer coach steps down
PHILIPPI – Alderson Broaddus will be searching for a new men’s soccer coach after the departure of Dan Kelly.
The London, England, native stepped down last week after serving as head coach of the Battlers for 14 years. ?The announcement was made on?Tuesday.
“I’d like to thank the AB family, of which I’ve been a part for over half my life,” Kelly stated in a press release. “I’d like to thank them for taking me in at a time in my life when I needed that embrace, giving me an education and allowing me to meet people that influenced me beyond what they’ll ever know
“I thank the team and the teams of the past for all their efforts. I wouldn’t trade any of them to this day.”
Kelly guided AB to eight West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament appearances during his tenure. He was also honored as the 2008 WVIAC Coach of the Year in leading AB to an 11-9-1 overall mark and WVIAC Tournament Championship.
He played for the Battlers from 1986-87 and was a two-time All-America choice. He helped AB to a WVIAC regular-season title in 1987 while earning conference player of the year honors. Kelly was the captain of the only Battler squad to finish undefeated during the regular season.
The Battlers went 3-13 this past season.
AB will also have a new women’s soccer coach next season after Cristian Materazzi replaced Patrick McGinnis earlier this month.
