D&E men, women earn wins

ELKINS – Four of the Davis & Elkins starters finished with double digits in the scoring column Saturday, as the Senators earned a 87-70 victory over Salem in G-MAC action at the McDonnell Center.

Kevin Bracy-Davis paced D&E in scoring with 20 points. Devin Miller scored 18 points and Juwan Strothers added 13 points. Wesley Sprinkle posted 14 points and a season-high eight assists. Alex Vasiljevic registered his third double-double of the season with 10 points and a season-high 14 rebounds.

“I’m very happy with the bounce back after Thursday night’s game (a loss to Ohio Valley),” Senators first-year coach Chris Cottrell said. “We played with tremendous energy and effort tonight and when we play to our athletic ability, we are capable of being a very good team.

“Now it’s important that we sustain our energy in practice as we hit a four game road swing. We are looking forward to the challenge of playing our G-MAC foes Kentucky Wesleyan and Trevecca.”

D&E held the Tigers to season lows in points and field-goal percentage

Walter Brock (16 points), Alex Webb (13 points) and Abel Tillman (10 points) scored double digits for SIU.

The 70-point effort is 26 points below the Tigers’ season average of 96.6 points per game. The Senators also managed to hold Salem 14 points under their previous average field goal percentage, 53 percent. D&E made 26 of 35 attempts at the free-throw line.

The teams traded baskets early, until the Senators made a 7-0 run to take a 38-29 lead. D&E held a 41-34 advantage at the half.

Bracy-Davis made 7 of 9 attempts from the field for 17 points, propelling D&E to the halftime lead. The Senators outrebounded the Tigers 27-19 in the opening 20 minutes.

D&E put the game away with a 19-4 run in the second half, making the score 81-62. Miller scored nine consecutive points to spark the run.

The Senators will be back in action at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Kentucky Wesleyan.

Women’s game

D&E 103, Salem 67

ELKINS – Davis & Elkins rolled to a 103-67 victory over Salem International University on Saturday afternoon to remain unbeaten in GMAC conference play.

Six Senators scored double digits including: Stephanie Wooten, 16 points; Hanna Carl, 15 points; Jorden Lykes, 14 points; Shanda Howell, 13 points; Sharmaine Baker, 13 points; and Ashley Bowles, 10 points.

SIU’s Porcha Davis scored a game-high 29 points. Inkera Patterson (14 points) and Tashay Smith (12 points) also posted double digits for the Tigers.

D&E held a decisive 65-41 advantage on the glass, including 30 offensive rebounds which translated into 36 second chance points. The Senators converted 24 SIU turnovers into 37 points.

D&E opened the game with a 21-10 surge, sparked by a three-pointer from Ashley Magallanez. The Senators led 44-29 at halftime.

Back-to-back 3-pointers from Carl, followed by a three from Tajee Pledger, expanded the Senator lead to 54-31 early in the second half and D&E never looked back.

The Senators will travel to league-leader Kentucky Wesleyan at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.
