Elkins girls fall to Lincoln
SHINNSTON – Makayla McElwayne scored 17 points to lift Lincoln past Elkins by a score of 57-18 Monday evening in Shinnston.
“It wasn’t pretty,” EHS coach Cathy Duffield said. “We just couldn’t keep up with them. They were fast. They passed the ball up the floor and kept getting fast breaks. They continually cherry picked us and caught us standing around.”
Sophomore Logan Dudley led the Lady Tigers with 10 points. Junior Jaycie Saseen contributed six points.
Duffield believes conditioning may have played a part in the loss.
“I don’t know what’s wrong, or I would fix it,” Duffield said. “Maybe we’re not in shape. I can guarantee you, we will run (today) in practice. We’re going to find out who really wants to play basketball.”
The Lady Tigers return to action on Jan. 16 at Preston County. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
TENNERTON – Morgan Cox hit for 14 points Monday to lead Grafton past Buckhannon 58-25 in Big 10 Conference action.
B-U coach Tristen Gray said turnovers were the biggest factor contributing to the loss. The Lady Bucs turned the ball over 27 times in the game.
“We had way, way too many turnovers,” Gray said. “If we are able to take care of the ball, we can play with anybody. We got in a situation where they forced us to turn the ball over. They kept taking away our opportunities to score and that hurt.”
Junior Courtney Reed led B-U in scoring with eight points. Senior Michaela Reger contributed seven points.
The Lady Bucs (1-5) return to action tonight in East Fairmont. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m.
BAKER – Tucker County tamed East Hardy 47-25 in Potomac Valley Conference Action on Monday in Baker.
While the Lady Mountain Lions got the victory, coach Jim Ambrose said he wasn’t pleased with the effort.
“We didn’t play well,” Ambrose said. “We need to get back in the gym and practice. We had too many snow days, too much time off. We play again (today) so we hope to get through these next couple of games and try to get some consistent play, because right now it’s not there.”
Aiyana Kachmarek led TCHS in scoring with 14 points. She also added eight rebounds and eight blocked shots. Savannah Ambrose also played well defensively, adding seven blocks.
TCHS returns to action tonight against Pendleton County. Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
