Mother Nature has once again taken high school basketball teams off the road.

All area games were postponed on Tuesday due to the weather conditions.

With schools cancelled in most counties today, more games are expected to be called off.

Boys’ contests scheduled for today included Elkins at North Marion, Buckhannon-Upshur at Preston, East Fairmont at Philip Barbour, Moorefield at Tygarts Valley, Pocahontas County at Tucker County and East Hardy at Pendleton County.

RANKINGS:?While the weather outside is frigid, area and Big 10 Conference schools are blazing in this week’s AP prep basketball poll.

Big 10 schools ranked in Class AA include 10-0 Robert C. Byrd, which is No. 1, Bridgeport at No. 7 and Fairmont Senior No. 9.

Tucker County moved up one spot to seventh in Class A.

On the girls side, Big 10 members Fairmont Senior (No. 2), North Marion (4) and Lincoln (5) are all ranked in Class AA,

In Class A, ranked area teams include Pocahontas County, which is fourth, Tucker County (sixth) and Tygarts Valley (ninth).

WVHIT UPDATE: Play in the West Virginia Hometown Invitational Tournament is scheduled to resume on Saturday for the girls, while boys also will take to the court on Friday.

Girls’ matchups on Saturday are Tygarts Valley at St, Marys, Sherman at Fayetteville, Clay-Battelle at Buffalo and Gilmer County at Pocahontas County in Division I.

Division II games on tap will be Montcalm at Union and Valley (Wetzel) at Van.

Boys’ games for Friday are Fayetteville at Clay-Battelle, Tygarts Valley at Midland Trail, Valley (Wetzel) at Buffalo, Richwood at Cameron, Doddridge County at Valley-Fayette, Sherman at Pocahontas County, Van at St. Marys and East Hardy at Greenbrier West.

The final rounds for the boys’ tournament will be held Feb.14-15 at the Summersville Convention Center, while the girls’ final will be contested on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 at St. Marys High School.

A total of 22 of the state’s 37 public schools were scheduled to participate in the WVHIT.
