PHILIPPI – Lewis County broke open a close game with a 16-0 third-quarter run to down Philip Barbour, 83-68, Wednesday night in Big 10 Conference action.

The Colts trailed 42-28 late in the first half before getting to within 44-41 on a 3-pointer by Trevor Matko at the 6:53 mark of the third quarter.

But the Minutemen then embarked on the game-deciding run, holding the Colts scoreless for nearly 5 minutes. Two quick baskets by all-state center John Riley started the surge, while Mark Moran and Joe Nichols converted 3-pointers during the barrage.

Nichols, who had a game-high 27 points on the evening, gave Lewis County a 60-41 cushion after goaling an old-fashioned 3-pointer with 3:53 left in the frame.

Riley added 25 points and 18 rebounds for the Minutemen, who trailed 22-21 after one quarter.

Moran also reached double figures with 13 points.

Al Johnson had 23 points and Chris Neville collected 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Colts, who dropped to 3-10.

Matko just missed double figures with eight points.

Lewis County (3-2) will entertain Big 10 Conference foe Lincoln at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Philip Barbour will return to action at 7:30 p.m. next Wednesday at home against East Fairmont for a league contest.
