Tigers cruise to win
FAIRMONT – The Elkins Tigers nailed nine three-pointers Friday en route to a 72-58 victory on the road at East Fairmont.
EHS coach John Lawson said he was pleased with his team’s effort, after not playing a regulation game since Dec. 28. Lawson said the extended layoff gave his squad time to rest up and heal injuries.
“It was a great road win,” Lawson said. “I was concerned going in, since we had such a long break, but the guys came out ready to play. We got early momentum and hit some shots. Our defense played great, too. We took them out of what they were trying to do and got them off their game plan.”
Logan Phillips led the Tigers with 27 points. Colby Gainer finished the night with 15 points and 100 percent shooting accuracy, hitting two field goals, three 3-pointers and two free throws. Junior Brandon Hammond added 15 points and Tyler Shreve 11.
Nicholas Greely led the Bees in scoring with 21 points, while Myles Johnson tallied 14 points.
The Tigers (5-1) will return to action at 7:30 p.m. Monday at home against Liberty
John Marshall 66
Tucker County 57
HAMBLETON?- A furious rally fell just short for Tucker County in a 66-57 setback to John Marshall on Friday night.
The Mountain Lions trailed by 25 in the first half and by 13 at the half before mounting a comeback.
“We cut the lead to four (points) with a minute left but made a turnover and they were able to pull away,” Tucker County coach Jim Ambrose said. “We came flat in the first half before starting to play better in the second half. We decided to press and were able to get back into the game. “We just dug ourselves in too big of a hole to pull it out.”
Stephanie Betler had 23 points for the Mountain Lions, while Savannah Ambrose added 11 points and 10 rebounds, and Aiyana Kachmarek 10 points.
Torie Derrow had 20 points for the Monarchs.
