Area wrestlers off to solid starts

HUNTINGTON – Area wrestlers had solid showings at the first day of the high school state tournament being held at Big Sandy Superstore Arena.

Buckhannon-Upshur’s Seth Cutright, who captured the state title at 152 pounds last seaason, won his first match of the tournament at 160 by pinning Spring Valley’s Nick Whitmore (1:34).

The Bucs’ Brandon Tenney (113), Dakota Linger (138), Matt Fair (145) and Daniel Nolte (285) also captured wins.

Tenney earned a pin fall voer Shady Spring’s Shane Scarbo, Linger pinned Point Pleasant’s Dakota Swann and Nolte took a major decision (11-1) against Greenbrier East’s Evan Roberts.

In Class AA-A, Philip Barbour also had a pair of wrestlers earn first-day wins.

James Bell (160) claimed a 5-3 decision over Williamstown’s Logan Lindsey and Travis Pomp (220) edge North Marion’s Roger Cummings, 1-0.

Lewis County particpants taking wins on Thursday included Corey Thompson (106), Chance Stalnaker (152), Kyle Rogers (170) and Ryan Carson (195).

The state tournament will continue today at 11:30 a.m. with the finals set for Saturday evening.
