Cumming’s powers Harman to win; Tigers fall

HARMAN – Coy Cummings tallied a double-double to push Harman past Union, 51-38, Tuesday night in Potomac Valley Conference action.

Cummings scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Junior center Casey Elza chipped in 14 points and also grabbed 11 rebounds.

Ryan Uphold paced the Tigers with 11 points. Tyler Seabolt and Travis Murphy scored eight points each.

“We started off really slow,” Panthers coach Fred Davis said. “We didn’t rebound well in the first half. Once we started rebounding, things started to pick up. The defense stepped up in the second half and we did a lot better. We started playing power ball inside and that’s what won it for us.”

Harman (9-4) will return to action at 7 p.m. today against the Reubenstein Center. Sectional action begins Saturday when the Panthers host South Harrison at 6 p.m.

Robert C. Byrd 69, Elkins 51

CLARKSBURG – Devonti Birch scored 20 points as Class AA, No. 1 Robert C. Byrd stayed unbeaten with a win over Elkins Tuesday night in Big 10 Conference action.

Luke Dyer and Kevin Steele added 13 points each for the Eagles (18-0).

Colby Gainer led the Tigers in scoring with 19 points. Logan Phillips contributed 15 points.

“Honestly, it was an ugly game both ways,” Elkins coach John Lawson said. “We just couldn’t get over the hump and make things happen when we needed to make things happen.

“They put the pressure on big time in the second half and that really made it tough on us. We just couldn’t find a way to handle the pressure.”

The Tigers (11-8) will travel to Greenbrier East at 7 p.m. Thursday. Elkins will then conclude the regular season Friday at Oak Hill.
