Former B-UHS mentor honored

TENNERTON – Former Buckhannon-Upshur High School soccer coach Tom Hasbrouck has been selected as the 2013 National Girls Soccer Coach of the Year.

The award is presented by the National Federation of State High School Associations and was announced Tuesday by the West Virginia Soccer and High School Coaches associations.

Hasbrouck, who retired after the 2012 season, was instrumental in forming the girls soccer program in West Virginia and at Buckhannon-Upshur High School in 1994.

His final team in 2012 went 22-2 overall and advanced to the state tournament.

He also coached softball and swimming at B-UHS during his 41-year career.

Before taking over as the girls coach, Hasbrouck guided the B-U boys to three state titles, 12 sectional championships and five regional crowns during his career.

He is one of the founders of West Virginia High School Soccer Coaches Association and was elected to its first Hall of Fame class.

Hasbrouck was also the chair of the high school all-state committee for over 20 years.

The NFHS, which has been recognizing coaches through an awards program since 1982, honors coaches in the top 10 girls sports and top 10 boys sports (by participation numbers).
