Tucker boys best Wildcats

HAMBLETON – Three Mountain Lions reached double digits in scoring Saturday to help Class A, No. 6 Tucker County defeat Pendleton County, 67-57, Saturday in Potomac Valley Conference action.

“We got into foul trouble early,” Mountain Lions coach Tom Gutshall said. “I think Pendleton played harder than we did. We didn’t execute well. We just converted a few more plays than they did at the end of the game. We just don’t have to intensity we need to be successful.”

Derek Zirk paced Tucker County in scoring with 23 points and seven steals. Ian Nichols scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.

Mitchell Mason added 11 points.

For Pendleton County, Evan Arrington scored 13 points and Haden Fox added 10 points.

Greenbrier East 52, B-U 27

LEWISBURG – Three players reached double digits in scoring to push Class AAA, No. 2 Greenbrier East past Buckhannon Upshur, 52-27, Saturday in non-conference action.

The Spartans, who led 17-15 at halftime, were led by Summer Martin with 13 points. Senior Chaunte McDowell added 12 points and Sydney Nunley contributed 10 points.

“Greenbrier controlled the paint in the second half,” B-U coach Tristen Day said. “Sydney Nunley is a good six-foot-four with a wing span of at least six-foot-eight. She made it hard for us to drive and attack, something we do well. Even so, Megan (Wilfong) played very well against the biggest frontline we’ve faced.”

Gray said foul trouble and turnovers once again plagued the Bucs. However, B-U out rebounded GEHS, 42-30.

“We had 33 turnovers, many unforced,” Gray said. “That’s 33 opportunities to score taken away. Add in the points off turnovers for Greenbrier and you get the 25 point margin.

“Half court to half court, we were right there with them. It’s both frustrating and exciting to see that game unfold as it did. We had a legitimate chance to beat one of the best AAA contenders at home playing a bunch of young girls but let the opportunity escape us. We will learn how to finish games like that. We are a better team because of it,” Gray said.

Wilfong led the Bucs in scoring with 14 points and grabbed 17 rebounds.

B-U will travel to Lewis County at 7:30 p.m. today.

Hampshire 63, Lewis County 58

ROMNEY – Brooklyn Perkey and Karli Hamrick scored 20 points each but it wasn’t enough to seal a victory for Lewis County, as Hampshire claimed a 63-58 win on Saturday.

“We had great momentum in the first quarter, but we got into foul trouble in the second quarter,” Minutemaids coach Theresa Johnson said. “We just couldn’t regain our momentum. I was very proud of our girls for not giving up.”

Mary Feaster paced the Trojans with 16 points. Emily Corbin scored 15 points.

Lewis County will host Buckhannon-Upshur at 7:30 today.
