Tucker County rolls by Union; TV bows to Irish
ELKINS – Tucker County and Notre Dame claimed wins Thursday in the Class A, Region II, Section 1 tournament being played at Elkins High School.
Stephanie Betler fired in 17 points to help the Mountain Lions defeat Union, 70-35, while the Irish eliminated Tygarts Valley, 53-46.
Tucker County (18-4) and Notre Dame (13-9) will battle at 7 p.m. today in the sectional title game.
“It was a great team effort,” Mountain Lions coach Jim Ambrose said. “(Union) pretty much packed everyone in around the net and didn’t guard us (on the outside), so we shot it. Our girls came out focused and executed the game plan. We passed the ball very well and played very unselfish.”
Junior Madison Mullenax added 11 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Tucker County. Bekah Simmons and Aiyana Kachmarek contributed eight points each. Savannah Ambrose blocked eight shots and grabbed seven rebounds.
Freshman Colleena Burdock paced the Tigers with 18 points. Harley-Ann Miller added seven points.
In the preliminary game, the Irish placed four players in double figures to get past Tygarts Valley.
Francesca Steele tallied 16, followed by freshman Jordan Rogers with 15, and Allie Ridgway and Victoria Goodman with 10 each.
Kelsey Arbogast was the lone player in double figures with 12 points for the Bulldogs, who jumped out to a 9-0 lead to start the game. Emily Pingley added nine rebounds.
Tygarts Valley’s lead was 30-29 after three quarters before the Irish took the final canto, 24-16.
“Notre Dame made the adjustments and we didn’t,” Bulldogs coach Mike DiPasquale said. “And to their credit, they hit their free throws down the stretch.”
The Bulldogs finished the season 12-8.
“We lose four great seniors (Arbogast, Pingley, Paige Pritt and Charity Lower),” DiPasquale added. “But we’ll come back next year and get after it again.”
