Weather forces postseason changes

ELKINS – Area teams can’t seem to shake the weather even with the start of postseason play.

With school being cancelled in several area counties on Wednesday, the Class A, Region II, Section 2 tournament being contested at Elkins High School was postponed.

The tournament will now begin today with another change. Tygarts Valley will face Notre Dame in the first game at 5:45 p.m., while Tucker County and Union will battle at 7:15 p.m.

The championship game is tentatively still scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday.

In Class AAA, Region II, Section 2 tournament, the title game is set for 7 p.m. today with Lewis County traveling to Hampshire.

The Minutemaids (6-15) used 24 points from Brooklyn Perkey to defeat Buckhannon-Upshur, 56-31, on Tuesday.

The Trojans (10-11) edged Elkins, 42-40, in the other half of the section.

Hampshire took a 63-58 decision over Lewis County in the lone meeting between the schools back on Feb. 8 at Romney.

Today’s winner will host the section 1 runner-up next week, while the loser will visit the section champion.

Pocahontas County, meanwhile, advanced to championship game of the Class A, Region II, Section 2 tournament with a 60-32 victory over East Hardy on Wednesday night.

The Warriors (14-7) will face Potomac Valley Conference foe Pendleton County at 1 p.m. Saturday at Petersburg High School for the crown.

Pocahontas County won both regular-season meetings and will attempt to capture its 13th straight sectional banner on Saturday.

In Class AA, Region II, Section 2 play, Philip Barbour was eliminated on Monday by Bridgeport.

Lincoln and Grafton both collected wins on Tuesday to set up the title game at 7:30 p.m. today at Shinnston.

Petersburg also will play for a sectional title today in Class AA, Region II, Section 1 action.

The Vikings, who defeated Frankfort on Tuesday, will hit the road to face Keyser at 7 p.m. today.

Keyser defeated Berkeley Springs to advance.
