AB gets strong pitching in sweep against Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Starting pitchers freshman Randy Dobnak and senior Jeff Conley tossed 11 1/3 innings, fanned 12 and allowed three earned runs in Saturday’s doubleheader sweep of Bellarmine University.

The Battlers won the first game 3-2 and game two, 5-2.

Dobnak yielded two runs in the first inning, but lasted 6 1/3 innings and earned his second win of the season in the early contest.

Senior Kirby Clemens doubled in the first run of game one and put ABU on the board 1-0. Matt Zerishnek recorded an RBI single in the fifth to tie the game and a throwing error on a fielder’s choice two batters later brought him home.

Zach Glaze entered the game with two outs remaining and a runner on first. He avoided a blown save and surrendered a hit in his second save of the season.

Conley toed the rubber in the nightcap and recorded six punchouts in the decision, his first victory of the season.

A four-run fifth frame in game two proved to be the most important inning of the afternoon. Conley helped himself with a two-run homer with two outs in the inning, while Zerishnek and David Bryan drove in the other runs for ABU.

Southpaw Chris Boatto appeared in relief and pitched the scoreless sixth and seventh innings. He held Bellarmine hitless and issued two walks. The save was his first of the season.

The Battlers were scheduled to face Hillsdale College on Sunday but the doubleheader was called off due to the weather. AB’s next game is slated for Tuesday at Charleston.
