Barbour All County Sports Organization to host tourney

PHILIPPI – The Barbour All County Sports Organizations is sponsoring a basketball tournament for students in grades six through eight. Registration will be accepted through March 16 for both girls and boys teams. Registration fee is $150 per team.

“This tournament was a big fundraiser for BACSO last year,” organizer Lori Wetzel said. “It is a great way for the kids to be able to help raise funds for middle school sports in the county. They seemed to really enjoy it and the surrounding counties were very supportive in helping us save our sports.”

Wetzel said last year 20 teams registered for the tournament.

Citizens banded together after a January 2013 decision by the Barbour County Board of Education to eliminate middle school coaching positions in the face of budget constraints.

Parents and community members quickly formed the Barbour All County Sports Organization and worked on many fundraising events to raise the $34,000 needed to rescind the board’s decision to cut the coaches.

This is the second year for the middle school basketball event and tournament play begins March 23 at Philippi Middle School.

The tournaments start March 23 at the Philippi Middle School.
