Elkins March Madness youth tournament begins
BEVERLY – The Elkins March Madness Tournament got underway on Thursday night at Beverly Elementary School’s Russell Curtis Memorial Gymnasium.
The tournament, sponsored by the Elkins-Randolph County YMCA, features teams competing in three different divisions – third-, fifth- and seventh grades.
Games will be played at Beverly, the YMCA and Davis &?Elkins College’s McDonnell Center today and Saturday. The title games will be held ?on Saturday, starting with the third-grade championship at 1:30 p.m. The other times will be determined.
In Thursday’s opening action, Philippi defeated Elkins, 40-14, in third-grade action as Mason Halfin scored 17 points, Brayden Cole added nine and Albert Gonzalez six.
Max Jackson paced Elkins with 10 points.
In fifth-grade play, Philippi also defeated Elkins, 41-12.
Bria Jacobs fired in 14 points for Philippi, while Jed Hawkins and Marissa Schiefelbein tallied five each.
Luke Jackson led Elkins with eight points.
Belington faced Grafton B in Thursday’s late game in third-grade play.
Teams competing in the three-day tournament include Elkins, Philippi Grafton, Buckhannon, Pendleton County, Tucker County, Moorefield, Belington and?Lewis County.
