EMS Hornets win one, lose one in tournament action

GLENVILLE – The Elkins Middle School softball team won one and lost a pair on Saturday in a tournament hosted at the Sue Morris Complex in Glenville.

“I thought the team did extremely well for our first outings of the season,” coach Shane Richardson said. “We did not even get to take infield before the games, so we just went out and got after it. I was impressed with our ability to get the bat on the ball. Our pitchers did a great job out there. We have some mistakes to clean up, but all in all, I was very impressed with our performance.”

In the first game, Summersville defeated Elkins, 5-4. The game was called in the 6th inning because we reached the 1 hour and 20 minute time limit.

Lauren Wilmoth pitched for Elkins going 5 and 1/3 innings giving up three hits, two earned runs, a walk and four strikeouts. Susan Riggleman went 2-3 with two singles and Alexis Ice went 1-2 with a single, an RBI and a run scored for Elkins.

In the second game, Elkins defeated Ritchie County, 11-4.

Mackenzie Guy pitched notched eight strikesouts in three innings, giving up three hits, three earned runs, and two walks.

Susan Riggleman went 2-2 with a single and a double, along with two RBI’s and two stolen bases.

In the third game, the Hornets lost to Greenbriar East, 5-1.

Lauren Wilmoth pitched six innings, giving up five hits, four earned runs, three walks and six strikeouts. She also went 1-2 with a single.

The Hornets host North Marion on April 4 at 6 p.m.
