G-MAC tourney to begin today at AB
PHILIPPI – Alderson Broaddus’ first year of competing in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference was a successful one on and off the court.
The Battlers captured the league’s regular-season title, had the player and coach of the year and now get to host the postseason tournament.
The conference’s eight schools will take part in the event, beginning today at historic Rex Pyles Arena. Quarterfinal games on tap include sixth-seed Salem International vs. No. 3 Central State at noon, followed by No. 2 Trevecca Nazarene vs. No. 2 Kentucky Wesleyan at 2:30 p.m.
The night session will feature host AB vs. No. 8 Ohio Valley at 6 p.m. and No. 5 Davis & Elkins vs. No. 4 Cedarville at 8:30 p.m.
The Battlers enter postseason action with a 21-5 overall record under veteran head coach Greg Zimmerman.
AB is led by league MVP Adam Kline and fellow first-team all-conference selection Malcolm Tatum, who leads the squad in scoring at 14.9 points per game.
The Battlers swept the season series against Ohio Valley, which features the G-MAC’s leading scorer, Sequan Lawrence (19.4).
D&E (12-16) split its regular-season meetings against the Yellow Jackets, each team winning at home. First-team all-league performer Devin Miller tops the Senators in scoring with 19.4 points per game, which ranked second in the league. The Yellow Jackets will counter with all-league performer Marcus Reinke, who averages 19.1 ppg.
Friday’s semifinal action will begin at 5 p.m. The title game will be contested at 2 p.m. Saturday.
A weekend adult pass for the tourney is $30. General admission to each session is $10 for adults and $2 for students and children.
