Mountaineers set for battle with UT

MORGANTOWN?- After two poor showings against Texas during the regular season, West Virginia will get a crack at redemption tonight in Big 12 Conference quarterfinal action.

Game time is set for 9:30 p.m. at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo. The action will be televised locally on WVFX.

“We’ve got a lot of incentive because we’ve played two of probably our worst games of the year against Texas,” Mountaineer point guard and All-Big 12 Conference first-team selection Juwan Staten said. “That definitely has us thinking we’re due for a good game against them. We’ve played as badly as we could have played in the first two. We’re due for a good one.”

WVU (17-14) will look to keep the momentum from Saturday’s win over Kansas into postseason play.

But to get past the Longhorns, the Mountaineers will have to keep Texas’ inside game in check. Cameron Ridley, a 6-foot-9 forward, has averaged nearly 15 points and 10 rebounds in the Longhorns’ two wins over WVU this season, while Jonathan Holmes, a 6-foot-8 post player, leads the team in scoring with 13.2 ppg.

“We’re going to probably try to do some things schematically that are a little bit different from what we did the first couple games,” Mountaineer coach Bob Huggins said.

WVU will counter with Staten and sophomore guards Eron Harris and Terry Henderson, who returned against Kansas after being out with an undisclosed illness.
