Mountaineers to visit old foe Georgetown in NIT

MORGANTOWN – West Virginia will travel to former Big East Conference foe Georgetown in the opening round of the NIT.

The Mountaineers (17-15) learned their postseason destiny on Sunday night and will meet the Hoyas (17-14) at 7 p.m. Tuesday on ESPN.

We’re happy to be able to continue play in the postseason,” WVU coach Bob Huggins said. “Obviously, we are playing a team that we are familiar with and a team that is familiar with us from our Big East battles. We’ve had great games recently with Georgetown and in Washington, D.C., at the NCAA tournament. Mountaineer Nation has always turned out in great numbers in games there, and I know they will be there on Tuesday.”

With Georgetown’s regular home facility, the Verizon Center, unavailable due to a previous scheduled commitment, the game will take place at the 2,500-seat McDonough Arena, where the Hoyas practice.

Both teams had disappointing efforts in their respective conference tournaments.

The Mountaineers were dismantled by Texas, 66-49, in the Big 12 tournament, while Georgetown was upset by the Big East Conference’s last-place team, DePaul, 60-56.

WVU last played the Hoyas on Jan. 7, 2012, with the Mountaineers earning a 74-62 win at the Coliseum,
