HARMAN – Three Harman players reached double digits in scoring as the Panthers defeated South Harrison, 40-29, in the first round of the Class A, Region II, Section 1 tournament.
“The defense was amazing for both sides,” Harman coach Fred Davis said. “Foul shots at the end of the game helped us win. It was the biggest crowd we had all year. We call them the sixth man because they kept us up all night and kept us in the game. The Harman community has been very supportive of us.”
Freshman Kameron Shifflett led the Panthers in scoring with 17 points. Juniors Casey Elza and Coy Cummings both registered double doubles. Elza scored 10 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked seven shots. Cummings grabbed 13 rebounds and scored 11 points.
Senior forward Cory Messinger paced the Hawks with 10 points. Zak Wentz added six points.
Harman (10-4) will face top-ranked Notre Dame at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Elkins High School in the semifinal round of the sectional.

MILL CREEK – Derrick Villarico fired in 20 points Saturday to push Tygarts Valley past Union, 66-42, in the first-round play of the Region II, Section 1 tournament.
The Bulldogs held a 28-19 advantage at halftime. However, Villarico came alive in the second half, scoring 15 of his points after the break.
“We came out tight in the beginning,” TVHS coach Tom Wamsley said. “It took us awhile to settle in. It was still a close game at halftime. I thought the defense played well the entire game for us. It kept us in it until we could get the offense figured out.”
Ben Sycafoose also reached double digits in scoring with 12 points for the Bulldogs. Keighan Chewning and Jace Kyle added seven points each.
Sophomore Tyler Seabolt paced the Tigers with 13 points. Travis Murphy added 10 points.
Tygarts Valley (10-11) will face Tucker County (15-5) at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday at Elkins High School in the semifinal round of the sectional.
